We have to have for a period of time running domino and exchange in our domain, both mail servers are sharing same domain name space let’s call it mydomain.com, we use smtp host in front of domino to route all email to external domains, we also receive all emails from external domains via this 3rd party smtp host that does all anti-virus and anti-spam filtering then forwarding to Domino server, the way I have this configured and working at this point is that users with mailfiles on Domino can send email obviously to other users with domain name mydomain.com and if user has mailfile on Domino message is delivered to her/him if user does not have mailfile on Domino message is send to Exchange server this is accomplished by using “Local Internet domain smart host” in Configuration Settings – Router?SMTP – Basic tab, if user does not have mailbox on Exchange – NDR is issued. This works exactly same way in opposite direction if user with mailbox on exchange send email to another user with same domain name mydomain.com message is delivered to local mailbox on exchange if exist, otherwise it is forwarded to Domino server this is accomplished on exchange via Send Connector under Hub Transport.
Now here is my issue, I’d like to have users with mailboxes in Exchange listed as contacts in Domino Directory so people using Lotus Notes client do not have to type entire email address every time they want to email exchange user, problem I had originally was that if I set Person Doc in DD as follow:
i.e. user name is Joe Doe
First Name: Joe
Last Name: Doe
User Name: Joe Doe
Short Name: JDoe
Mail System: Other (or Other Internet Mail)
Internet Address: jdoe@mydomain.com
And all other fields are blank.
Problem: email is not delivered to exchange user because Domino is translating/formatting email address for this recipient as Joe_Doe@mydomain.com
Not sure why it does it regardless if I lookup this person or type email address in correct format it still converts it to joe_doe@mydomain.com before sending to exchange. I know this is domino issue not exchange because if I remove this person completely from Domino Directory and type email address then it goes to exchange just fine.
I was able to fix this, and perhaps there is better way of doing it but I found that if I change Person Doc as follow:
First Name: Joe
Last Name: Doe
User Name: jdoe@mydomain.com
Short Name: jdoe@mydomain.com
Mail System: Other (or Other Internet Mail)
Internet Address: jdoe@mydomain.com
And all other fields are blank.
In this case I can exchange messages successfully between Domino and Exchange and also with external messages sent to exchange user via Domino routing.
Problem I’m facing now is following:
We have BES server running on another Domino server and although with second example configuration where I replaced User Name and Short Name in Person Doc with email address when message from exchange is received to Lotus Notes I can reply no problem and Lotus Notes client shows sender email as jdoe@mydomain.com but I cannot reply successfully to same message from Blackberry device, on Blackberry device sender email is showing as “Joe Doe@mydomain.com” and again this is due to fact that this Joe Doe user has Person Doc in Domino Directory if I do same test with user that does not exist in DD all works, somehow BES is looking up Domino Directory and is finding this Joe Doe person doc and converting email address in such way that it is unusable.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
